Metallica adalah sebuah Heavy Metal / Thrash Metal / Hard Rock / Speed Metal band dari Los Angeles, California, yang dibentuk oleh James Hetfield (vokal, rhythm) dan Lars Ulrich (drum) pada tahun 1981 dengan nama "The Young of Metal Attack".
Awalnya Metallica dipengaruhi oleh band-band Metal dan Hard Rock seperti Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Manowar, Venom, Motörhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden dan Diamond Head.

Pada tanggal 27 Maret 1982, Metallica sebagai band pembuka untuk konser Saxon di Whisky.
Pada tahun 1989, Metallica dinominasikan dalam Grammy Award, "Best Heavy Metal Performance of the Year" bersama AC/DC, Iggy Pop dan Jethro Tull.
